Question: attach file to prompt

Hi there.

Thanks a lot for developing this tools, first of all.

I was wondering if there is already the possibility to attach a file to a prompt,
either using the compose-prompt way or the org-source block.

I'm not sure I've seen it among the current features, let me know in case,
or if not I think it could be an useful addition to the tool.

I'm guessing you're referring to attaching text files? I've been meaning to do something about that, but I haven't had a chance to work on it.

The closest I can offer from the file's text buffer is: C-x h C-c C-e which is the equivalent of mark-whole-buffer and chatgpt-shell-prompt-compose, which will copy entire region over to the compose buffer. I have chatgpt-shell-prompt-compose bound to C-c C-e.

I have a very rough implementation of attaching pdfs in ob-chatgpt-shell though IMO not very practical (you have to keep track of IDs and save them yourself).

Right, I meant specifically text files.

Thanks for the hint, yeah, that's what I thought I could do C-x h and C-c C-e.
The inconvenience of that could be when you have the file is fairly big...

Anyway, I was hoping for something working in the org src_block like a :file llms.txt,
where I can then ask questions on that file, without even seeing it. Maybe there's
a shortcoming for that too, having that file in an initial src_block that can be hidden,
or something...

Does that implementation for pdf in ob-chatgpt-shell work for txt files as well?

I've set aside some time this morning to implement via M-x chatgpt-shell-insert-local-file-link You'll need to set chatgpt-shell-include-local-file-link-content to t.

The inconvenience of that could be when you have the file is fairly big...

Keep in mind if bigger than model limits, content will be dropped.

You'll need chatgpt-shell v2.24.1 and shell-maker v0.78.1.

This is a nice feature. Thanks for adding it.

I'd also like to be able to attach binary files (for instance images and PDFs). I guess this would be more work since it would require us to add the capability for every API separately. I've implemented it myself via REST for Gemini models before for a Common Lisp project I'm working on. It was straightforward but I guess it's a question of if we want to put it the time.

One idea could be to make it an optional feature for each model so that PDFs and images just won't be supported if it is not implemented for a particular model.
