Got as far as my last comment before weirdness struck... any ideas?

This command goes haywire and spams this error:

/usr/local/bin/startpubsub.sh: 24: read: Illegal option -e
Enter a command to run (e.g., ./pubsubclient <command> <args>, all paths /development/...):
